March 7 was Employee Appreciation Day, but we’re celebrating our team members all month long by sharing their stories. Read more about Ryan Baird, Behavior Support/Lead Teacher Support at New Story Schools Columbus.
What is your favorite thing about working here?
My favorite thing about working at New Story Schools is watching the students grow socially, physically, and mentally. This is currently my sixteenth year in the field, and I have so many memories and experiences that have shaped my outlook on life and helped me become the person that I am today.
What keeps you coming to work each day?
The feeling I get from helping someone change their outcome in life is the best feeling I’ve ever experienced and to me there’s nothing more fulfilling than that.
How do you make an impact on students’ lives?
Showing up for them on the good days and on the bad days. I never take their bad days personally and I try my best to build a relationship with every student I’ve have the privilege to meet/work with.
Which one of our BetterTogether values resonates with you most personally and why?
“Supportive” is the word that resonates the most for me. A huge part of my role is supporting others – both staff and clients. I enjoy coaching others on the science of behavior and how we can use it to help decrease barriers to students learning.
What does a “day in the life” look like for your role?
Primarily, I float around the building answering calls for behavior support and providing coaching to staff. I also am one of our Ukeru trainers so some days I get pulled to help train our new staff.
Can you talk a little bit about your career trajectory and what led you to where you are now?
I started in the field over 16 years ago as someone who had no experience with autism or special education. I have held several different roles in my time at HLC/New Story Schools including a 1:1 aide, teacher support, teacher, job coach, vocational coach, Ukeru trainer, and behavior support. My current role allows me to help students and staff throughout the building. I’m grateful that I get to utilize my experience and knowledge to help coach and support others.
What has been your proudest moment or accomplishment in your role?
Being awarded Teacher Support of the Year a few years ago was a very proud moment for me.
What is something about you that not many people know?
Most people probably don’t know that I love nature! I enjoy kayaking, camping, and fishing. I was lucky enough to teach my 5-year-old how to fish this past summer and now I have a lifetime fishing buddy!
