Meet Rosie: Interim Head of School

Meet Rosie: Interim Head of School

March 7 is Employee Appreciation Day! We’re celebrating our team members all month long by sharing their stories. Read more about Rosie Castros, Interim Head of School at New Story Schools Independence.

What is your favorite thing about working here?

My favorite thing about working here is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives every day. I love being able to provide them with the tools they need to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Seeing their progress, no matter how big or small, is incredibly rewarding.

What keeps you coming to work each day?

What keeps me coming to work each day is the relationships I’ve built with my students and colleagues. I truly believe in the work we do, and I know that even on the toughest days, I have the opportunity to positively impact my students' lives and learning experiences. Also, being part of a supportive team that shares the same passion for education keeps me motivated.

How do you make an impact on students’ lives?

I make an impact by meeting students where they are and helping them grow at their own pace. I use a multisensory and structured approach to learning, incorporating visual supports, hands-on activities, and personalized strategies to ensure every student has access to meaningful education. Additionally, I advocate for my students by helping them develop self-regulation and communication skills, which set them up for success beyond the classroom.

Which one of our BetterTogether values resonates with you most personally and why?

Collaboration resonates with me the most because I believe the best outcomes for students happen when educators, therapists, families, and support staff work together. I have seen firsthand how collaboration leads to innovative strategies and a more comprehensive approach to student success. By sharing knowledge and supporting each other, we create an environment where students and staff thrive.

What does a “day in the life” look like for your role?

Every day in my role is a little different, but it typically includes teaching lessons along with supporting students with communication and self-regulation skills. I also spend time collaborating with colleagues, coaching teachers, and providing professional development sessions. A big part of my day involves problem-solving and adapting strategies to help both students and teachers succeed.

As Interim Head of School, I’ve also taken on a greater leadership role in supporting staff, building relationships with families, and guiding the overall direction of the school. I’m focused on strengthening communication, empowering teachers, and ensuring that our students receive the best possible educational experience.

Can you talk a little bit about your career trajectory and what led you to where you are now?

I started my career at Haugland Learning Center, now New Story Schools Columbus, as a middle school teacher, where I worked for multiple years before transitioning to elementary and adjusted high school. Over time, I moved into teaching first grade and kindergarten, which deepened my passion for early childhood education. Eventually, I stepped into a lead teacher/instructional coaching role for New Story Independence, where I supported teachers in their professional growth and classroom practices.

My background in communication sciences and disorders has shaped my approach to teaching, especially in supporting students with diverse learning needs. Through these experiences, I developed a passion for professional development and mentoring teachers, which led me to my current role. Stepping into the Interim Head of School position has been a rewarding challenge, allowing me to apply my experience in a leadership capacity while continuing to support students and staff.

What has been your proudest moment or accomplishment in your role?

One of my proudest moments was being awarded Teacher of the Year 2024 for my site. It was an incredible honor to be recognized for the impact I’ve had on my students and colleagues. Another accomplishment I’m proud of is leading a statewide professional development session on verbal de-escalation, helping teachers across Ohio build confidence in managing challenging behaviors and creating a supportive learning environment for all students.

What is something about you that not many people know?

Not many people know that I used to be a zip line instructor! I’ve always loved the outdoors and enjoy spending time outside whenever I can. That experience taught me a lot about patience, safety, and encouraging people to step out of their comfort zones—skills that have carried over into my teaching. Whether it’s in nature or the classroom, I love helping others build confidence and try new things!
