March is Employee Appreciation Month! We’re celebrating our team members all month long by sharing their stories. Read more about Amanda Evans, Academic & Behavior Support Staff (ABSS) at our Wyoming campus, and how positive mindsets help her students!
What is your favorite thing about working here?
My favorite thing about working at New Story Schools is our work environment. I always feel supported in everything I do.
What keeps you coming to work each day?
The students are what keeps me coming to work each and every day.
How do you make an impact on students’ lives?
I feel I make an impact on the students by installing a positive mindset. I always respect the students and their opinions.
Which one of our BetterTogether values resonates with you most personally and why? (Integrity, Accountable, Collaborative, Inclusive, Supportive)
Supportive is one of the Better Together values that resonates with me the most. I always like to be helpful and be encouraging to others.
What does a “day in the life” look like for your role?
A day in my role as an ABSS consists of walking around the classroom to support the students with their academics and answering their questions. In my role, I remind students of what is and is not expected of them. I use a lot of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model in the classrooms. I always walk around the classroom and give positive praise, candy, and high fives! My days as an ABSS are a mix of laughter and learning.
Can you talk a little bit about your career trajectory and what led you to where you are now?
I started off by working with adults with disabilities in high-risk group homes for nine years. During that time, I realized I wanted to make a difference earlier in people's lives by supporting them at a younger age. Thats when I started working for New Story Schools and I've been here for six years.
What has been your proudest moment or accomplishment in your role?
My accomplishments in my role would be becoming a certified Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) instructor and an ABSS mentor.
What is something about you that not many people know?
Not many people know that I love to go skydiving.
