On October 26th, students and teachers from all Rivermont Schools celebrated Read for the Record Day, a national campaign organized by Jumpstart to promote inclusive literacy and social-emotional development for children in early education by creating the largest shared reading experience. Millions of people in libraries, organizations, schools, including over 800 of our very own at Rivermont joined together to read the same book on the same day, making it a day to remember for students and staff alike.
This year’s chosen book was “With Lots of Love” written by Jenny Torres Sanchez and illustrated by André Ceolin. It is a heartfelt story about a girl who moves to the United States from Central America, leaving behind her beloved Abuela and culture, trying to adjust to a new way of life. The book explores important themes on family, celebrating different cultures, and connecting with loved ones over long distances. After reading the book out loud together in classrooms, Rivermont students participated in completing interactive activities to reflect on the lessons learned, like designing a postcard dedicated to someone special.
Staff and students had a fantastic time growing their love for reading and fostering a sense of community because of Read for the Record Day. Rivermont Schools’ participation in this event inspired a love for learning within their students that will extend far beyond the classroom and continue to nurture young minds.
